Dan Perjovschi: Hong Kong First

Opening: (Friday) 28 January 2011; 7pm

Exhibition: 29 January ‒ 17 April 2011

Venue: Para/Site Art Space, G/F, 4 Po Yan Street, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong

Curator: Alvaro Rodriguez Fominaya

Para/Site Art Space is honored to present Dan Perjovschi’s solo exhibition in Hong Kong. It follows a series of artists’ projects organized by Para/Site Art Space that are responsive to the political and economic positions of the city and contextualizes this discourse regionally and globally.

Dan Perjovschi is well known for having brought the narrative of political cartoons into the realm of the museum through site specific wall drawing installations. These installations deal with the idea of the everyday and are a comment on the economic and political condition of the XXI century. The artist has translated a medium more usual of the small size format into large scale and monumental wall drawings that engage in the architecture of the location, pushing the meaning and limits of the exhibition space. Audiences follow this narrative whilst experiencing the architecture of the art space. These site specific projects are conceived by Dan Perjovschi as an ongoing series in progress that connect the different art galleries that host his exhibitions.

Intelligent humor is part of his critique which hits at the core values of the society that he is looking at and creates a starting point for social debate. Hong Kong provides a new urban background for his research as the territory epitomizes many of the issues addressed in Dan Perjovschi’s drawings, including the ideas and deconstruction of capitalism, consumption and hyper-density.

Dan Perjovschi born 1961 in Sibiu Romania lives and works in Bucharest.

His recent solo exhibitions include Late News at ROM Toronto and Drawing Institute at San Francisco Art Institute in 2010, Recession at Ludwig Museum Aachen in 2008, What Happen to US? at MoMA New York and I am not Exotic I am Exhausted at Kunsthalle Basel in 2007, The Room Drawing at Tate Modern London, and On the Other Hand at Portikus Frankfurt in 2006 and Naked Drawings at Ludwig Museum Cologne in 2005.

He participates at group shows like Lyon Biennial in 2009, the Sydney Biennial and Fifth Floor at Tate Liverpool in 2008, The Magelanic Cloud at Centre Georges Pompidou Paris and the 52nd Venice Biennial in 2007, New Europe at Generali Foundation Vienna and the 9th Istanbul Biennial in 2005.

His first retrospective exhibition States of Mind was held at Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University in 2007.

Perjovschi received George Maciunas Prize in 2004.

Para/Site Art Space is honoured to present Recorded Waves: Moving Images from Indonesia.

The use of video for artistic purposes in Indonesia dates back to the late 1980s, when pioneers Krisna Murti, Teguh Ostentrik and Heri Dono, began to experiment with video in order to expand the scope of their artistic creations. However, the influence of video in contemporary art in Indonesia is not the result of innovations within the artistic field; rather it is a critical positioning towards the entertainment industry and, above all, a critique of television.

During Suharto’s dictatorship from 1967 to 1998, the government television channel Televisi Republik Indonesia was manipulated and controlled for propaganda purposes. However, with the growing market in Indonesia in the late 80s and early 90s, the entertainment industry grew and new television channels appeared. Video rental stores and video readers for private use also began to proliferate. Thus, home cinema emerged as an alternative to the unilateral view presented by the government.

In the late 1990s, and particularly during the fall of Suharto in 1998, video played an important role as an instrument of denunciation against unacceptable social and political events. These videos showed messages that went beyond what was presented and accepted by the government, and documented the reality that the government was hiding from its people. In Indonesia, both in politics and in art, video has been used as a means of documentation and as a means of creating images that respond to specific social and political contexts.
Since 2003, the artists’ initiative ruangrupa has been organising the ‘OK. Video – Jakarta International Video Festival’, which takes place biannually in the capital. One of the aims of the festival is to raise awareness of video in a creative sense and to introduce the medium to mainstream audiences. The festival is thematic and, since its first edition, has been internationally conceived. It also gives particular emphasis to the content rather than technical experimentations of the medium – echoing the origins of Indonesian video art. The social and political context of the work is important for the selection of videos featured in the festival.

The exhibition Recorded Waves: Moving Images from Indonesia includes highlights of this festival, as well as ground-breaking positions of video art from Indonesia with works by pioneer video artist Krisna Murti, as well as emerging and established artists Tiong Ang, Muhammad Akbar, Henry Foundation, Nala Atmowiloto, Wimo Ambala Bayang, Ari Satria Darma, Eko Nugroho, Anggun Priambodo, Prilla Tania, Wok The Rock and Tintin Wulia.

Curator’s research supported by Goethe Institute (grant for curators) and ruangrupa.

Jompet .Third Realm

Opening: (Friday) 19 November 2010; 7pm

Exhibition: 20 November 2010 – 16 Janruary 2011

Curator: Alvaro Rodriguez Fominaya

Venue: Gallery A, Para/Site Art Space, G/F, 4 Po Yan Street, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong

Para/Site Art Space is honoured to present Jompet. Third Realm, a new project developed by Jompet Kuswidananto in collaboration with theatre director Yudi Ahmad Tajudin. The history of Indonesian culture, as part of the Third World and former colonized countries, can be read as narratives of a nation that is perpetually in an “in-between” situation or state of transition. From pre-colonial to colonial periods, colonial to post-colonial, agrarian culture to industrial one, from industrial to post-industrial, from rural culture and cosmology to the urban ones.

The history of Indonesian culture is an “in-between” cultural history. A culture that is located between two cultural spaces: between the traditional and the modern, the original and the alien, the inside and the outside, the high brow and the low brow. It never (again?) stays and grows inside one cultural space that is specific and sharply different from another specific culture. It builds on a mix (and excess) of cultures. Its “body” is constituted by many different cultural layers.

As a cultural entity Indonesia is never singular, but the in-betweeness and the transitional conditions have become the overarching and constructing frame covering all the (sub)cultures within.

The exhibition revolves around a physical roof that transforms the gallery space into an installation that includes video, sculpture and performance. Jompet Kuswidananto and Yudi Ahmad Tajudin explain that “the “space” under the roof is constructed by a constantly shifting and changing milieu of ideas, events, performances and meanings. The space of “in-between”, where issues about origins, influences and identity could be discussed simultaneously without privileging one over the other. In Java’s case: where one can be a Muslim (or any other religion) and a Javanese at the same time; local and global; modern and traditional. Where one is something in-between different things.”

A performance will be conducted on the opening night, 19th November at 7 pm

In conjunction to this exhibition Para/Site Art Space presents Recorded Waves: Moving Images from Indonesia, a videoprogramme curated by Katerina Valdivia Bruch including 12 artists from this country.

Para/Site Art Space is pleased to announce the international book launch of Who Cares? 16 Essays on Curating in Asia. For these events the Hong Kong based organisation has teamed up with Arthub – OV Gallery (Shanghai), Taipei Contemporary Art Center (Taipei) and Sotheby’s Institute of Art (Singapore) as launch platforms in Asia.

Who Cares? is an anthology that compiles 16 essays on curating art in and of Asia. One of the themes addresses the politics of care, commonly understood as the basic role of curators, with regards to art and artists, across time and contexts. Another theme revolves around markers of success in the realm of contemporary curating. A third recurring theme deals with curating in the globalised art world of advanced travel and communication technologies. A fourth theme reconsiders the audience as active producers in a curated experience. Through a variety of perspectives and literary styles, these texts constitute primary notes towards ‘curatorial criticism,’ a subfield of art criticism that identifies the new in curating today.

Para/Site Art Space is pleased to announce the multiple book launch of four publications: This Is Hong Kong: 15 Video Artists, Who Cares? 16 Essays On Curating In Asia, Fugue In The Key Of Understanding and FAX: The Hong Kong Works. The launch of these publications is part of Para/Site Art Space’s mission to contribute to the development of a critical voice within the Hong Kong and global art scene.

Who Cares? is an anthology that compiles 16 essays on curating art in and of Asia. The book includes essays by Hu Fang, Norman Ford, Hou Hanru and Michael Lee, among others, and is designed by seed  projects. This project is co-published by Para/Site Art Space, Studio Bibliotèque and seed | projects.

The publication of This Is Hong Kong follows the international tour of the video exhibition organized by Para/Site Art Space. The book features essays by Alvaro Rodriguez Fominaya, Venus Lau and Robin Peckham. It includes descriptions of videoart works by 15 artists from Hong Kong, with Leung Chi Wo, Adrian Wong or Leung Mee Ping among them. The catalogue is designed by Nadim Abbas.

Fugue In The Key Of Understanding is the publication following the exhibition of Para/Site Art Space – Hong Kong Jockey Club Curatorial Training Programme. Editors are students of the programme— Michelle Lee, Wong Wing Fung, Alvis Choi. The catalogue includes essays by the curators and Valerie C. Doran, as well as descriptions on works by Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba, Mari Velonaki, Matt Dabrowski and The Many Hands Of Glamour, among others.

FAX: The Hong Kong Works is an appendix catalogue to FAX. The publication is produced for the traveling exhibition co-organized by The Drawing Center, New York, and iCI (Independent Curators International), New York, curated by João Ribas, and circulated by iCI. For the Hong Kong leg of the exhibition, curator Álvaro Rodríguez Fominaya invited 18 new contributors to conceive of the fax machine as a tool for thinking and drawing. This book is a document of these fresh perspectives to the project.

SHARP/ CLEAR/ DEEP

Opening: (Friday) 17 September 2010; 7pm
Exhibition: 18 September ‒ 24 October 2010
Venue:	Para/Site Art Space, G/F, 4 Po Yan Street, Sheung Wan, Hong Kong
Organizers: Gallery VER and Para/Site Art Space
Curator: Rirkrit Tiravanija
Bangkok Coordinator:	Narawan Pathomvat
Participating Artists:	Charit Supaset, Disorn Duangdao, Worathep Akkabootara, Montien Boonma, and Rirkrit Tiravanija + Nico Dockx

Para/Site Art Space is honored to present SHARP/CLEAR/DEEP curated by Thai artist Rirkrit Tiravanija. The exhibition showcases a group of contemporary artists from Thailand, and is part of an exchange programme between Gallery VER in Bangkok and Para/Site Art Space in Hong Kong.

In the current crisis of identity, Thai society is going through the double-edged confrontation between the established institution of bureaucratic urbanism and the grassroots ruralism of peripheral under class. Democracy becomes the victim of political tug of war, whereby every side of the conflict hides behind a pretense of the search for freedom of expression and self-relevance within the society.

Sharp as a knife’s edge is the communal sense in which a shared interest becomes a focal point where obsession of a tool brings people for exchange and trade.

Clear is the voice of the people’s demand that they be heard and acknowledge, that change is knocking its boots against the wall.

Deep are the grooves of history etched into the memory of the minds of the people, where the future is dawn and the past cannot be erased.

About the Curator
Rirkrit Tiravanija (b. 1961) is among the world’s most influential contemporary artists. His solo exhibitions include Rirkrit Tiravanija: A Retrospective (Kunsthalle Bielefeld, Bielefeld, Germany, 2010); Less Oil More Courage (Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel, Germany, 2009); A Retrospective (tomorrow is another fine day) (Serpentine Gallery, London; Musée d Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Paris; Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, 2004-5); Hugo Boss Prize (Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, 2004); and the 48th Venice Biennale (Venice, 1999).

About the Artists
Charit Supaset (b.1976), Disorn Duangdao (b.1973), Worathep Akkabootara (b.1976) are members of an artist collective, As Yet Unnamed. The collective has been included in Imagine Peace (Bangkok Art and Culture Center, Bangkok, 2010); The Revolution Will Not Be Televised (Taipei Artist Village International Residency Program, 2010); As Yet Unnamed First Station (About Studio/About Café, 2008). Each artist’s work diverse widely, while Supaset works with knife-making and drawing, Duangdao prefers conceptual installation, and Akkabootara oftens fills his conceptual works with texts and symbolism.

Montien Boonma (1953-2000) was one of the most pioneering Thai artists who used local materials to create art works that explored Thai identity. His works include sound and odor to stimulate all human senses. He was the first Thai artist selected by the Biennale of Sydney in 1990. Several of his works are displayed in leading museums and galleries, including the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Australia and Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Japan.

About Gallery VER
Gallery VER began with the establishment of Namdee publishing station in Bangkok in 2000 by Rirkrit Tiravanija. In 2004, the project was renamed PLAN.b publishing, production and design limited partnership. Established in 2006, the gallery initially aims to act as a platform for launching innovative ideas in such forms as artist’s books, textbooks, magazines, music, film, video, posters, graphics and design.
Gallery VER is interested in ideas and objects, which can be published and/or multiplied and disseminated into the cultural stream. In the curatorial form of exhibitions, projects, one-off activities and events, institutional exchanges, the gallery seeks to initiate new strands of programming under the best possible circumstances and processes.
The gallery also provides chances for artists, designers and other creatives abroad to realize and produce work in Thailand. In this capacity, Gallery VER have been working with such artists as Tobias Rehberger, Olafur Aliasson, Philippe Parreno, Superflex and many others.
